Description

The GR1 is our original and most versatile rucksack. Think of it as a dayruck or minimalist overnight ruck that protects a laptop with confidence - but lets you get in and out easily. Comfortable in cities, warzones, when rucking, and at all GORUCK Challenges, GR1 is our most popular piece of gear.

PRIMARY FEATURES

Special Forces Grade Materials

The materials we choose are proven to thrive in war. YKK Zippers perform despite Middle East sandstorms, and 1000 denier CORDURA® is the preferred material for Special Forces rucks due to its strength to weight ratio and durability.

Badass American Construction

High stress points are strength tested at over 400 lbs. GR1 is capable of holding more weight than any human should ruck with.

Bombproof Laptop Compartment

Your laptop costs $2,000, that's why we made GR1 the best, and toughest laptop bag ever built. The separate, 17" tall compartment next to your back is extra reinforced to securely take a laptop into combat. And you can get it in and out easily.

Frame Sheet

A removable, hard plastic frame sheet stabilizes the bombproof laptop compartment and allows you to carry more weight comfortably. If there were no frame sheet, the ruck would curl in on itself too much when you cinch it down on your shoulders.

False Bottom

We built a false bottom in the bombproof laptop compartment so that when you set your ruck down, your laptop won't even notice. This adds labor to the build of the ruck, but it's necessary for max function.

MOLLE Attachments

3 rows of external and internal MOLLE webbing let you customize GR1 how you want. MOLLE is the same system used by our Armed Forces to attach life-saving sensitive equipment, such as ammunition.

Ruck Plates

Ruck Plates (10, 20, 30, or 45 LB) work great in the laptop compartment (recommended). You can also put them in the large internal pocket or cinch them down to the internal MOLLE.

Hydration Port

Exit port for hydration bladder tube found under the top handle of the ruck.

Silent Zipper Pulls

YKK zippers with silent, glove friendly zipper pulls constructed from parachute 550 cord. There is no good reason why zippers should make noise when rucking (or assaulting). Ours don't.

Extra Padded Straps and Handle

Shoulder straps and top handle are extra padded to carry heavier loads more comfortably.

Opens Flat

Easy to pack and organize. Special Forces medical rucks share a similar design.

Pockets

Three internal pockets: one large elastic pocket, one large mesh zippered pocket and one small go-to zippered pocket. External slant pocket provides quick access to keys, snacks, and other small items.

2" x 3" VELCRO

Allows you to customize your GR1 with the patch of your choice.

Rainproof

By military-spec submersion tests, waterproof means you could repeatedly submerge something and its contents would stay entirely dry. Our rucks are highly water resistant aka rainproof.

GR1 Buzz

"The GR1 is the best backpack I have ever owned," says Jon Wiley, lead designer for Google Search.

"Made in the USA, bomb proof, with a life time guarantee, they're the kind of company we love to support. Enough said."

"No nonsense tactical looks that fit in just as well in the urban jungle as they do in the real one."

"These GORUCK bags are some of the best things I have seen in a long time and I'm expecting big things from the brand."

Marvel Comics' classic vigilante hero carries a GORUCK GR1 when waging his one-man war on crime.

GR1 black is authorized for wear in Army ACU uniforms and in all equivalent uniforms in all the service branches.

SIZING GUIDE

Short answer:

  • If you're under 6 ft tall go with the 21L.
  • If you're 6 ft or taller go with the 26L.

The long answer is you want a ruck that fits with the length of your back. The 21L GR1 is 18" tall and the 26L GR1 is 20" tall. That being said, using our under/over 6 ft rule usually works out pretty well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my American!! I love Goruck gear and the American is one of my favorites. It is my one and only travel bag. The American always has its own stool at the airport bar and gets all the attention. In all seriousness, it's a great looking bag that holds a full weekend's wardrobe and makes airport travel a breeze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for fun and work. I ordered by ruck after reading an article in Men's Health Magazine and love the experience. In addition to the exercise I get out of it, I also use my pack for my summer job doing grunt IT work (removing, installing, updating computers and other technology devices) in a school district in rooms without AC. The hydration bladder keeps me hydrated and stays cold throughout the entire day. The large space allows me to hold several cans of compressed air, the tools I need, notepad, cables, and other items needed with a fair amount of organization. Also the self sealing ends of the hydration bladder, hose, and nozzle make it easy to clean, and keep in the fridge to chill the bladder over night since you can just unhook the bladder from the hose and not worry about water all over the fridge when you wake up. The only drawback I've had is that the straps on the inside are fixed making it hard to put my tools in them with a full bladder and having them stay in position. Even knowing that ahead of time I still would have ordered the pack because just the space alone allows for easy organization.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this bag to death This bag is absolutely, 100% solidly built. I ruck with this bag minimum 20 mi a week and it always performs better than I can. The straps could be a bit more comfortable; I have the smaller GR1 and a sternum strap, but with 30 plus pounds find the straps rough on my shoulders after extended rucking sessions. I take this bag to work, I take this bag to class, I try and take this ruck up mountains in 90+ degree heat against my better judgment. Overall, this bag is beyond well made, solidly crafted, and a joy to ruck with for shorter (5 mi with less than 30 #) distances, after that the straps seem to bite in a bit. Overall, the bag is wonderful and I'm glad I have it. Buy a GR1, you certainly won't regret it after you use it for a while. I don't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great customer service!!! First I would like to thank the rep who answered my email. The GR1 is built tough and is the best pack I have ever had. I wish I could have come across this through high school and college. I'm not only going to come back and buy a GR2 but also buy my son one for school. I can't rave enough about it. I use it on the daily for work and my weekend warrior rucks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3 years of Daily use I've been using my GR1 almost every day for 3 years now (Bought June 7th 2013) It's been all over the world as my carry on bag, it's been my daily work bag in the office and in the field stuffed full of tools and dragged around mine sites all over Australia, it's done a few weighted rucks and an unknown number of grocery trips. I've dropped it, dragged it, jammed it full near to bursting trying to fit an extra few kilos of souvenir past the AMTRAK guards on a rail trip from Vancouver BC down to LA... I could not be happier :) The bag still looks amazing and has at no point failed me. 3 years on and the worst visible wear is on the heat shrink of the zipper pulls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ruck. I've needed a solid, reliable ruck for all of my working life as a military pilot, survival instructor and backpacker. The GoRuck GR1 is perfect in its simplicity and execution and although I wouldn't use it for serious distance, as a gear hauler for chucking in the back of a helicopter, strapping to the top of a rover or just going away for a weekend, it is perfect. I've recently used it as a day pack & overnighter in the Canyonlands and a handful of National parks and it has become a treasured posession. Not cheap but quality seldom is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multi Purpose Backpack This Backpack is what I carry with me 95% of the time. I ride a motorcycle so I usually always need to have a bag with me to carry my clothes for work or whatever you would normally keep in your car. I carry my bag with me when I go to work, the grocery store, the beach, pretty much everywhere except if i'm headed out for a little nightlife. Because obviously its too big to carry around a bar. I think the most important feature of this bag is that it fully opens up, so you can load everything perfectly. The top zippered pocket on the inside is useful for anything you would grab quickly like a wallet or phone because you can access it from the top of the bag without having to fully open it. I think the front slash pouch is pretty much useless except for tossing receipts or papers into because its so thin and you cant see into it. I added a zippered pouch that I keep in the main compartment which i use for organizing small things like bandaids or lighter etc. I also added a water bottle holder to the outside. The Soft Taco from HSGI fits perfectly on the left or right side. I don't carry a laptop with me so I cant speak on the quality of the laptop compartment, however the bag is extremely well made, and i couldn't imagine it ever becoming damaged just from everyday use. The cordura fabric is really water resistant. I take the bag to the beach where its gotten wet and covered in sand. After a quick shake its good to go. I take it hiking and on trips and it is pretty much indestructable. The only cons i have to say about it are the lack of organization, for which I think a small pouch is necessary. And Its size isn't appropriate for sightseeing or bar hopping or crowded areas. Other than that I think its probably the best backpack i've ever owned, and I think its worth the price for a product that will probably never need to be replaced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A perfect example of KISS done very well. As I am based in the uk I had a bit of trouble getting hold of the GR1 so when I was on holiday in Orlando and saw "The American" was on sale it was too good to miss. GoRuck shipped it to my hotel no problem and delivery was quick. I also had no problem tracking exactly where the shipment was. The bag itself is solid and heavy and is a perfect example of something kept simple but done really well. While you can tell it has been hand made the stitching & build was all very good quality, and the materials great. My main concern before getting the bag would be that the colour would be washed out or pinky but it is a great "pillar box" red as we would call it over here. From my POV the red was a nice change from normal black bags and helps me spot it (and people spot me ). The bag was initially used during my trip in Orlando and while trips round Disney parks & Discovery cove are not the most destructive environments they did give me a good chance to wear it full of stuff and in the heat. Plus there were a couple of heavy thunderstorms to tests its water resistance. I found the bag comfy for all day wearing (7 hours plus) even fully packed with shopping and souvenirs. Even in the pouring storm there was no water inside the bag. Since getting back to the UK, as well as using it every day for work, I have been using it more as it is intended for OCR training, rucking etc and am confident if I take it through the Tough Guy race in Jan it should survive with no issues. In particular the lack of a waist strap concerned my but due to it's size I would be pushed to have enough weight in it for that to be an issue. The very wide & padded straps are comfy enough to take all the weight I've packed in it so far (including a 24kg kettlebell). For a daily use bag the size is plenty and the internal pockets give it just enough adaptability without meaning it is impossible to find anything. I've added a couple of Molle bags for practical use on the outside, and a few carabiners for clipping on gloves & hats. Overall it's a great bag, if you accept that the build comes with some weight. This is definitely not an ultralight pack but if you are taking it somewhere where it will take a beating I have not seen anything else that comes close. I quite literally use it for everything from going to meetings through to off-trail hiking in thunderstorms and it is adaptable enough for all of it. I'm fully confident that I will use it every day for normal use and events and it should still easily outlast me to be passed onto my kids.
