GR1 (MultiCam)

GR1 (MultiCam)

In 2008, GORUCK was a napkin sketch of GR1. Our founder’s goal was simple: take the best features, construction, and materials from assault packs he used in Special Forces, and proudly overbuild a ruck in America that’s (1) tough enough for urban warfare and (2) compliant with Rule #1 “Always Look Cool”. Baghdad meets NYC warrior poet style.

Since launching in 2010, GR1 has been that bag. Special Forces soldiers use and abuse it in war, people of all walks of life commute with it through every major city in the world, and it’s been proven by tens of thousands of GORUCK Challenge participants.

If you’re only going to buy one ruck for the rest of your life, this is it.

Sizing Guide: the classic 21L fits all shapes and sizes. If you’re ~6’+ and/or just love more space, size up.

We proudly overbuild GR1 in the United States of America. It thrives in cities, airports, warzones, when rucking, and at all GORUCK Challenges. But no matter what, the toughest part about GR1 is the person wearing it.

Special Forces Grade Materials

The materials we choose are proven to thrive in war. YKK Zippers perform despite Middle East sandstorms, and 1000 denier CORDURA® is the preferred material for Special Forces rucks due to its strength to weight ratio and durability.

Badass American Construction

High stress points are strength tested at over 400 lbs. GR1 is capable of holding more weight than any human should ruck with.

Bombproof Laptop Compartment

Your laptop costs $2,000, that's why we made GR1 the best, and toughest laptop bag ever built. The separate, 17" tall compartment next to your back is extra reinforced to securely take a laptop into combat. And you can get it in and out easily.

Frame Sheet

A removable, hard plastic frame sheet stabilizes the bombproof laptop compartment and allows you to carry more weight comfortably. If there were no frame sheet, the ruck would curl in on itself too much when you cinch it down on your shoulders.

False Bottom

We built a false bottom in the bombproof laptop compartment so that when you set your ruck down, your laptop won't even notice. This adds labor to the build of the ruck, but it's necessary for max function.

MOLLE Attachments

3 rows of external and internal MOLLE webbing let you customize GR1 how you want. MOLLE is the same system used by our Armed Forces to attach life-saving sensitive equipment, such as ammunition.

Ruck Plates

Ruck Plates (10, 20, 30, or 45 LB) work great in the laptop compartment (recommended). You can also put them in the large internal pocket or cinch them down to the internal MOLLE.

Hydration Port

Exit port for hydration bladder tube found under the top handle of the ruck.

Silent Zipper Pulls

YKK zippers with silent, glove friendly zipper pulls constructed from parachute 550 cord. There is no good reason why zippers should make noise when rucking (or assaulting). Ours don't.

Extra Padded Straps and Handle

Shoulder straps and top handle are extra padded to carry heavier loads more comfortably.

Opens Flat

Easy to pack and organize. Special Forces medical rucks share a similar design.

Three internal pockets: one large elastic pocket, one large mesh zippered pocket and one small go-to zippered pocket. External slant pocket provides quick access to keys, snacks, and other small items.

2" x 3" VELCRO

Allows you to customize your GR1 with the patch of your choice.

By military-spec submersion tests, waterproof means you could repeatedly submerge something and its contents would stay entirely dry. Our rucks are highly water resistant aka rainproof.

Packing GR1

GR1 Buzz

"The GR1 is the best backpack I have ever owned," says Jon Wiley, lead designer for Google Search.

"Made in the USA, bomb proof, with a life time guarantee, they're the kind of company we love to support. Enough said."

"No nonsense tactical looks that fit in just as well in the urban jungle as they do in the real one."

"These GORUCK bags are some of the best things I have seen in a long time and I'm expecting big things from the brand."

Marvel Comics' classic vigilante hero carries a GORUCK GR1 when waging his one-man war on crime.

GR1 black is authorized for wear in Army MultiCam uniforms and in all equivalent uniforms in all the service branches.

The Special Forces curse clearly states, the more space you have, the more stuff you’ll pack. But, sometimes you need more stuff, and fit matters. The 21L GR1 is 18" tall and the 26L GR1 is 20" tall. The Classic 21L GR1 fits all shapes and sizes. If you’re ~6’+ and/or want 5 additional liters and 2” of additional height, go with the Larger 26L. When moving through airports, commuting, or rucking, the goal is for your ruck to be high on your back. No matter how tall you are, the 21L will rest 2” higher than the 26L.

When in doubt, go with the 21L.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my American!! I love Goruck gear and the American is one of my favorites. It is my one and only travel bag. The American always has its own stool at the airport bar and gets all the attention. In all seriousness, it's a great looking bag that holds a full weekend's wardrobe and makes airport travel a breeze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for fun and work. I ordered by ruck after reading an article in Men's Health Magazine and love the experience. In addition to the exercise I get out of it, I also use my pack for my summer job doing grunt IT work (removing, installing, updating computers and other technology devices) in a school district in rooms without AC. The hydration bladder keeps me hydrated and stays cold throughout the entire day. The large space allows me to hold several cans of compressed air, the tools I need, notepad, cables, and other items needed with a fair amount of organization. Also the self sealing ends of the hydration bladder, hose, and nozzle make it easy to clean, and keep in the fridge to chill the bladder over night since you can just unhook the bladder from the hose and not worry about water all over the fridge when you wake up. The only drawback I've had is that the straps on the inside are fixed making it hard to put my tools in them with a full bladder and having them stay in position. Even knowing that ahead of time I still would have ordered the pack because just the space alone allows for easy organization.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid. Best bag I've owned Quality construction, minimalist design, boundless utility. The GR0 is my ideal daily bag. The size of the GR0 is perfect for a daily carry (the GR1 was a little large for my everyday use) -- I can fit my laptop, lunch, gym clothes (not shown), guitar stuff; all the stuff that I need. It's also indispensable as a carry-on travel bag. Fits under the seat, durable, useful. I love mine. Only con is that it is a little too heavy to be a day-hiker. If you're looking to do a day hike and want to keep weight down, a specialized ultra-light pack would be better. If, on the other hand, your day hike is heading out on a ruck, more power to you!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not up to the usual standard I like the bright colors, but the Contrasting stitching color really draws attention to some sloppy stitching (on my pack) not sure if they're all this way but mine has some pretty sloppy / miss aligned stitching on the molle bar tacks , the blue or red just draws your eye right to it
