WHAT ITEMS ARE COVERED BY SCARS?
All GORUCK built gear, apparel, and footwear — everything we manufacture — comes with our Scars Lifetime Guarantee. No receipt necessary — we can recognize our own stuff — and your date of purchase does not matter. Hence lifetime. If you are having an issue with a 3rd party manufactured item, please contact us here.
WHAT DO REPAIRS COST?
If there is a defect in workmanship or materials or if you actually manage to wear our stuff out, GORUCK will fix or replace (at our discretion) your item, free of charge. Damages caused by more than excessive abuse will be repaired at a fair price and we will be sure to reach out to you to discuss cost before going forward with the repair. If we can’t repair it, we’ll figure out how to get you back in action at a discount.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPPING?
You’re responsible for the cost of shipping your GORUCK gear back to us. We cover the return shipping plus the cost of any extras we throw in your box (patch, koozie etc.).
CAN SCARS CUSTOMIZE MY GEAR? EVEN IF IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE REPAIRED?
Yes. In addition to repairs, Scars offers various customizations to our Rucksacks and USA Built Apparel, for a fee. Your gear does not need to be repaired for us to customize it. For current customizations and pricing, please fill out the Customization Form below.
RUCKS & GEAR
GORUCK gear gets better with time and use and you won’t want to part with yours. The shoulder straps feel just right, the fabric loses its stiffness and conforms perfectly to your back. You’ve shared a lot of adventures together and our team will do whatever we can to make sure you share many more. We prefer repairs to replacements — in addition to making you happiest, it saves your gear from a date with a landfill, where it was never intended to be.
ARE ZIPPERS COVERED UNDER SCARS?
If your zippers wear out and no longer function properly, we’ll happily repair or replace them, free of charge. If your zippers are crushed, mutilated, burned, corroded by saltwater, look like a chainsaw was taken to them, or smashed to smithereens, we’ll take a look at the extent of the damage and work with you to get you back in action for a fair price. A good story and a picture or two helps.
Zip lube on your zippers is like oil for your car and we recommend that you always give your zippers and your entire rucksack a freshwater rinse after doing something significant like a GORUCK Challenge.
GET SMART ON ZIPPERS
We use only the best zippers in the world. And yet, if you load up your rucksack with any heavy item made out of steel or iron or raw kryptonite — and then you slam the rucksack down so that the weight bears its full force onto the zipper, sometimes the zipper loses that fight. Not always, but sometimes. If you do it frequently, and add weight, your zipper will definitely lose that fight. To help prevent this from happening at something like a GORUCK Challenge where slowing down is not an option, use Ruck Plate Cradles, or wrap you Ruck Plate in pool noodle foam or put some other padded layer (preferably one that’s non-absorbent) between your Ruck Plate and the zippers. This will also help stabilize the weight and make it more comfortable to ruck. Another pro tip is this: if you see a bunch of raw bricks and jagged stones just lying around and you put all of them inside your rucksack and then go do a bunch of crazy stuff, the construction site in your ruck will abrade the zipper’s threads and maybe even the metal teeth from the inside as everything shifts around. We hate to see this because it’s preventable with a secure, wrapped Ruck Plate. As a matter of policy, crushed or damaged zippers, zippers subjected to abrasion on the inside of the rucksack (from unwrapped bricks, for instance), and zippers corroded by saltwater (all you have to do is rinse them off after your ocean Challenge) are not covered under our Scars Lifetime Guarantee. Sometimes, we bend the policy, where we can. It’s always a conversation and we’re in the business of doing right by you.
CLEANING YOUR RUCKSACK
Rinse your rucksack with fresh water and soap, flip it inside out (pro tip) and rinse it some more. Then hang to air dry. Under no circumstances should you use a machine washer or dryer. The rucks can withstand a summer or ten in Baghdad just fine, but the concentrated heat from dryers will warp some of the lamination in the back panel and shoulder pads. Some washing machines are OK, most are not. Damage from washing machines or dryers is not covered.

USA BUILT APPAREL
We use premium fabrics and premium threads and we reinforce zippers and take additional steps in construction to ensure that our apparel thrives during a lifetime of abuse. It’s never meant for a landfill and we don’t build it with that in mind. We believe if you buy something for one season, you can wear it all the seasons of your life.
SCARS WILL REALLY REPAIR MY APPAREL FOREVER?
We’ll happily patch up any holes or reinforce any stitching to keep you on your way in our Built in the USA GORUCK Apparel. If you’re actually able to wear our apparel out and we cannot repair it, we will replace it, free of charge. Don’t think of this as a pure replacement program, think of this as a repair program. We build the best and want it to last forever, with you.
WHAT’S THE CATCH?
Massive fire damage and mutilation are not covered as a matter of policy, but it’s always a conversation. If an ember from a Colorado campfire sparks your direction and then there’s a hole, we’ll happily patch it up, free of charge. If you send us a pile of ashes, that’s a slightly different story. If you share that story, we’ll get you back in action at a discount.
And we’ll send you a note of congratulations and do 50 push-ups, in your honor.
CAN SCARS CUSTOMIZE MY APPAREL?
Yes. Scars offers a customization to our USA Built Apparel, for a fee. Current customizations include:
- Adding 3" x 2" Patch Loop

MACV-1’s are built to the same Special Forces life or death quality standards as all GORUCK gear and apparel. If there’s a defect in workmanship or materials, or if you actually manage to wear them out, we’ll replace your pair via our Scars Lifetime Guarantee.
We want to hear the story about how you wore your MACV-1’s for 10,000 miles on every continent, in every terrain. We’re years into our journeys, and ours still look brand new, only better.
HOW DO I CLEAN MACV-1’S?
To clean them, use a hose and a bucket of soap. Clean the Workhorse Insert separately and remove it from the boots. Then hang your MACV-1’s upside down to dry. Do not use a washing machine or a dryer on your boots, damage that might result is not covered.
CAN I POLISH THEM?
To maintain the highest performance standards for your MACV-1’s, polish them up from time to time like a professional.
ARE THE SOLES COVERED UNDER SCARS?
Because MACV-1’s are lightweight performance boots (as opposed to heavy work boots with nailed in soles), we cannot (as in, physically it’s not possible for us) replace just the soles on your pair of MACV-1’s. Over time and thousands of miles, the shielding rubber outer sole will wear down from the miles you’ve done in them (like any set of tires you drive for 40,000 miles). This is to be expected and not a defect. A hole or stitching that comes undone due to wear and tear (like a flat tire): those would be problems that definitely fall under our Scars Lifetime Guarantee.
If you can wear the soles on your MACV-1’s down to where there’s no more tread at all, you’re practically an ambassador for us and we’ll happily trade you a new pair, free of charge, for a story and a picture from your favorite spot where you wore them.
WHAT ABOUT FIRE DAMAGE?
It’s a common practice to dry boots around a campfire after a long day of rucking. Then maybe you fall asleep and forget about your boots. We’ve been there, we’ve done that, then your boots are melted when you find them in the morning and the soles look like Frankenstein. As a matter of policy, we do not cover fire damage on MACV-1’s. But it’s always a conversation, send us a note and tell us the story and we’ll see what we can do to get you back in action at a discount.
Lucky for you, MACV-1’s dry out really, really fast. Even when not next to a campfire. Put newspaper or loosely shove a small towel in them to accelerate the drying process when the sun is not out.
