A TEE THAT PASSES THE COMMANDO TEST

In WWI, wool was so important to British soldiers on the front lines that knitting wool sweaters was seen as a patriotic duty. By WWII, wool’s reputation was further solidified. However, SAS members spent extended periods in the field, laden with rucksacks and additional equipment, constantly on the move.

After witnessing repeated failures with their traditional wool sweaters, the SAS sought a lighter alternative, reinforcing the shoulders and elbows for durability. This became the iconic British Commando Sweater, and the inspiration for what we call the “commando test” — to pass muster, Merino wool must be reinforced in high stress areas. If it’s not, it simply fails too fast like the traditional wool garments that the SAS rejected.

We build ALL GORUCK Merino Wool tops with reinforced paneling on the shoulders so your Merino shirt keeps its structure better over the long haul – representing the standard for performance in the Merino wool category and passing the Commando Test. This ensures that your Merino shirt maintains its shape over time, while still providing all the advantages of Merino, such as odor resistance and perfect temperature regulation, regardless of the adventure or mission at hand.

History of Wool in the Military

While wool has always been the primary fiber in all U.S. Armed Forces dress uniforms, military leaders are again looking at modern wool as an under-layer and for its benefits surrounding heat resistance and flame retardancy for our troops.

Reviews

Great gear and looks good too

"Great, practical and provided some needed warmth in a very wet ruck !"

— Laurence D. (5/5)

Expectations exceeded.

"I've been alternating between two of these for several years now. Can't recommend them enough. They're light weight and durable. They also don't stink if you let them airdry after a decent sweat. If you're looking for a merino wool shirt, this is exactly what you're looking for."

— Drake (5/5)

Quick Drying and Comfortable

"I just used the Tee on the Col Nick Rowe Basic and I am impressed. It was soft and felt comfortable with my ruck on, and after swimming through the lake it dried in minutes."

— Sam G. (5/5)

Merino Wool is Growing on Me

"I really like the Commando Tee and the quarter-zip long sleeve pullover. Perfect weight for coolish Los Angeles mornings or nights, and the long sleeve pullover is good for airplane flights, when the cabins gets too cool for tee shirt but not cold enough for a jacket."

— William R. (5/5)

The Best

"Love these shirts! I swear by the long sleeve versions in the fall and winter. And these short sleeve’s are my go to go spring and summer. Goruck makes the best merino wool clothing in my opinion"

— Kyle S. (5/5)

My 4th commando wool shirt

"Happy to add another commando wool shirt to my collection. This new one with the charcoal shoulders is equally as great as the others (I had to size up because I’m bulking up, the others are still in great condition, not being replaced)"

— Stew A. (5/5)

Great shirts, comfortable and durable

"Love these shirts. They're nice when you want to be a little cooler than the long-sleeved versions but still comfortable."

— Kevin H. (5/5)

Love the Wool Merino

"Great shirts and socks. I have enjoyed working out and doing yard work in the wool merino shirts and socks."

— Pablo P. (5/5)

Soft and Comfy!

"Merino Wool, even in the summer, is totally superior for rucking and runners."

— Hisatomo k. (5/5)

Highly recommended

"Great fitting, used during our F3 Louisville spring Convergence. Highly recommended"
