HERITAGE RUCKING SHOES

In 1945, Camp Mackall, North Carolina was the forge for the Airborne paratroopers who helped secure Allied Victory in WWII. When two million people filled Times Square to celebrate the end of the war, America marked a triumph of unity, service, and purpose—a generation that returned home to build the country we love today.

We built the MACKALL 45 to honor that relentless American spirit.

We fused our elite Special Forces rucking chassis with a sharp, heritage suede upper for modern performance and old school looks. This means you can wear one pair of shoes for workouts, travel, and dinner. From a 12-mile overnight beatdown at RUCK OR DIE to stepping out in a suit on the streets of NYC, the Mackall 45 delivers zero-blister comfort, rugged durability, and uncompromising performance out of the box.

FEATURES & SPECS

ZERO BLISTERS OUT OF THE BOX
Our standard was no blisters, no hotspots after at least one hour with 45 lbs on your back, right out of the box - WITHOUT SOCKS ON. To achieve this, even in a sweaty Florida summer, we build a seamless heel transition and 360-degree padding wrapped in synthetic suede to eliminate any hard seams and friction points. They do what they’re supposed to do.

BUILT TO LIVE ON YOUR FEET
We created the rucking revolution and the footwear to support it from the ground up. The special sauce here is the combined support from the midsole foam and the premium insert. Rucking is harder on gear and the people wearing it, so we build it tougher to support your feet over thousands of miles on any terrain.

GOLDEN ERA PIGSKIN SUEDE
Rooted in the WWII heritage of Camp Mackall and old school performance trainers, we built the 45s with top-of-the-line pigskin nubuck suede. It has an iconic look backed by serious toughness. Over time, it breaks in even better than new, and remains supple. You’ll like them a year later even more than you like them Day 1, and that’s not something you hear every day about performance shoes.

ONE PAIR OF SHOES TO RULE THEM ALL
An old school upper with a performance lower that you can ruck all night in, hit a workout (any workout), then dress them up to get to your big meeting or a nice dinner out. You don’t need to travel with 3 pairs of shoes when you have one pair to rule them all.

SCUFF GUARD
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

SPEARHEAD
Inspired by the Special Forces Unit insignia, the GORUCK Spearhead is always moving forward to face the hardest challenges head on.

1945
Inspired by the year 1945 when Camp Mackall sent the final Airborne Troopers overseas to secure the Allied Victory, when 2 million people poured into Times Square to celebrate the end of WWII and the Greatest Generation started coming home to shape America in its spirit. Service, sacrifice, duty, country — these are all baked into the ether that we inherited in our service after 9/11.

  • Build Location: Built in Vietnam
  • Care Instructions: Remove insert. Hose them down thoroughly to clean off dirt and sweat, then let them air dry or use a shoe dryer (buy one and put it in your garage, you filthy animal!). Do not use a washer or dryer—it's easier this way, and your shoes will last longer.

A NOTE FROM JASON

THE GR1 OF FOOTWEAR

July 2026

Three years after development started, I got on a plane to NYC wearing one pair of Mackall 45s. I knocked out route recon before the first-ever Ruck Or Die, grabbed dinner, and headed to the beach under the Brooklyn Bridge for a 1 AM start.

We rucked all over NYC that night, pushing through workouts—including one to honor a buddy who gave his life in Afghanistan. We chased the sunrise, and we found it. When we finally set our rucks down, we drank victory beers overlooking One World Trade Center, where there used to be Two. We felt alive to the core of our being.

When the body’s call for Green Beret Nap Time (GBNT) could no longer be ignored, we answered. But when I woke up, I threw on a suit with that same pair of Mackall 45s, hit the streets, and added our fuel to the city that never sleeps.

This whole crazy GORUCK adventure came full circle when I rucked past the Lower East Side apartment where we first designed GR1 to thrive in Baghdad and NYC. I smiled ear to ear thinking about how much has changed since 2008, and how the most important things remain exactly the same.

We pour blood, sweat, tears, and love into everything we build. It shows in every step, and in every stitch. You’re going to love them like we love them.

9 Miles in DC

"With very little wear, I took them on a trip to DC and wore them walking all around the mall. They were comfortable, with no blisters that sometimes comes with having to break in new shoes. My feet feel great. Awesome quality, and they look good."

My eyes are up here!

"Love these shoes! Have a few MACV-2 boots that I ruck, hike, climb with until the soles are gone. Same chassis here but classy looking. They feel great and I get a lot of compliments. If they wear like my boots I will be a fan for life. I have even had to say to a few admirers “my eyes are up here”."

Solid Footwear and a Great Value!

"I got my Mackalls and I've been wearing them for almost a week now. They're my day-to-day footwear because they look great and go with every color of Simple Pants I own. There are two things I noticed. First a second eyelet to keep my feet from slipping. Definitely would be nice to have. Second, while great on cement, gravel, dirt trails, they are a little slippery on wet bathroom floors. A minor point but if you're out and about and you use a public restroom, walk in carefully if the floor is wet. I like wearing them with crew socks versus ankle or no-show socks. So far it's been strictly rucking and ruck-based workouts. I wouldn't wear them to the gym, the sole is too rugged for my taste in a gym environment. I wear them all day at work and are very comfortable. I have a 12 wide foot and I bought the 12.5 to compensate for foot swelling while rucking. Overall, I am very happy with the footwear that GORUCK has developed and would recommend them."

Super comfortable right out-of the-box

"Super comfortable right out-of the-box until I got to mile 3 during my first ruck with these shoes. Moisture collected in the upper heel causing some rubbing resulting in two blisters. Once they get broken in, I’m sure I’ll love them."

— James D. (3/5)

Something Isn't Quite Right

"I’ll start with full transparency: these shoes were provided to me at no cost as a warranty replacement for a worn-out pair of my original GORUCK Mackalls. GORUCK’s customer service throughout that process was outstanding. The color of my original pair was no longer available, so I chose the Mackall 45 in Fog as the replacement. I’m also a big fan of GORUCK footwear. I currently own two pairs of Mackalls, two pairs of Ballistic Trainers, three pairs of Rough Runners, and a pair of MACV-2s. I also bought my wife and kids their own pairs last year. We all love them! I’ve put those shoes through workouts, long-distance rucks, heavy loads, snow, mud, creek crossings, and plenty of abuse. Every pair I’ve owned has performed extremely well right out of the box. Unfortunately, this pair has been the exception. For their maiden voyage, I planned a 5-mile ruck carrying 70 pounds. GORUCK advertises the Mackall as capable of being worn blister-free without socks for an hour while carrying 45 pounds (I've been going heavy lately prepping for an event). I was wearing GORUCK socks, but by mile three I developed a significant hot spot on my left foot and had to cut the ruck short. When I pulled my sock back, I had some pretty gnarly blisters on my achilles and the back of my heel. I gave my foot a full week to heal before trying the shoes again. I also did a 16. 8mi 2-day backpacking trip over Labor Day Weekend with my Mac-V2s and double socks to protect my blisters, and I made it through without an ounce of pain. So I figured my feet were ready to try the 45s again. Tried them again today, this time with Darn Tough socks, and in less than a quarter mile I could feel the exact same hot spots developing. Heel lock lacing technique has not seemed to helped. I switched back into my original Mackalls and had zero issues. Same feet, same activity, and my older Mackalls remain incredibly comfortable while this new pair starts creating hot spots almost immediately. I still love GORUCK gear, and this experience doesn’t change the excellent performance I’ve had from virtually everything else I own from them. Their customer service has also been top-notch. But based on my experience with this particular pair of Mackall 45s, something about the fit or construction feels noticeably different from my originals. Could it be my left shoe is just off a bit? Maybe my feet aren't the right fit for them? I don't know. I really wanted to love them, especially because my original Mackalls have been such great shoes, but right now I can’t confidently use this pair for the rucks I got them for. Hopefully they will perform well for others."

Disappointed but hopeful

"I was very excited to get these shoes and see if they would live up to the description and was extremely disappointed right away. I put them on, they seemed to fit really good and I took off. I was in pain pretty quickly and ended up with blisters worse than I have had in many years. I’m not going to blame it completely on the shoes because I’m sure my feet aren’t as tough as they used to be and I was wearing cheap socks so I would blame the shoes about 50%. I tried to give it a couple of days and go again but the blisters had not healed and I made things worse. So to date I have only worn the shoes twice and both times were not very pleasant. I am letting my feet heal, got some good merino socks set aside and will give it another go but for now I have wasted a pretty good chunk of change on shoes I can’t wear. I hesitate to even post this review because I have not tried to communicate with Go Tuck about the shoes yet but I guess a review should be honest regardless of good or bad. If I am able to get them broken in I will update the review to let you know."

I received my Mackall 45’s,

"I received my Mackall 45’s, put my GoRuck Merino wool socks on and my first ruck I got a blister on my left heel. Not good, I have never gotten a blister from rucking before. I also couldn’t have gotten a smaller size."

— Steven N. (1/5)

Awesome shoe

"Got these last week and wore them for a 6 mile hike on Sunday. I already want the other 2 colors. They look great. They’re super comfortable. They’re my new everyday shoe."

— Matt C. (5/5)

Awesome…but blisters

"I love the look and the feel, extremely well made and great for rucking and boot camp workouts. They did however give me blisters on the inside of both heels on the third time wearing."

— James H. (4/5)

Blister Prone

"I got these in really excited to try them out. But, they continue to rub a blister on my heel. This is even trying to break them in slowly. Any help? Wild Bill"
