PURPOSE BUILT FOR RUCKING
A TWO MILLION YEAR LEGACY
Rucking has been around for over two million years. Our bodies evolved to efficiently carry weight back to the tribe, high and tight on our backs. Two thousand years ago, Roman Legionnaires used rucking as a test to select their best soldiers, a practice that continues with today’s Special Forces. And the body remains as da Vinci drew it, elegant in its creation and refined to ruck weight over time and distance, on our backs. This is the life we choose.

The Rucker® 5.0 supports for your spine’s natural curvature while you’re out crushing calories, building strength, and saving your joints one step at a time — and it retains the fit and feel that is as timeless and natural as the human body.
The Rucker is the greatest and most comfortable rucksack ever built. Though many imitators exist now, it has no equal. The only thing tougher and more elegant than the Rucker is the person using it, and that means you.

RUCKER 5.0 EXPLAINED

WHY WE RUCK
Benefits of Rucking
- Burn more calories than walking alone by adding weight to your natural stride
- Train your heart with efficient Zone 2 cardio that maximizes fat loss
- Build muscle and bone density, strengthening your legs, glutes, back, and core with every step
- Improve your posture by engaging your core and pulling your shoulders back
- Save your joints with a low-impact alternative to the high-impact stress of running
- Ditch the screen and get outside for social fitness with your real-world community
HOW RUCKING BUILDS YOUR BACK
Carrying weight actually builds resilience. Spine biomechanics expert Dr. Stuart McGill calls adding load to a walk a foundational progression to build true physical robustness. Rucking provides a mechanical advantage that brings your center of mass over your hips. This unloads the spine—silencing overactive lower-back muscles and forcing your core to stabilize your body—helping you forge real-world strength with every step.

Rucker Sizing
The 20/20 Rule & The Belt Test
THE 20/20 RULE
If you aren't sure where to start, the standard is simple. A 20L Rucker paired with a 20LB Ruck Plate is the ideal setup for most people.
THE BELT TEST
When rucking, you want the weight high and tight on your back, which the Rucker’s design promotes. You also want the bottom of the ruck to be higher up on your back because the more that the ruck feels like it’s one with your back, the more comfortable rucking is. Less, in this case, is more.
The easy to explain fit guide is that you ideally want the bottom of the Rucker above your beltline. If it’s at or below, avoid putting any additional heavy weight in the bottom of the ruck. High and tight is the goal.
NOTE: if or when you use a Padded Hip Belt, you will lower the rucksack just a bit to transfer more of the weight to your hips, over your beltline. Using a Hip Belt is a different technique than a pure shoulder carry. We recommend hip belts as an option on longer, heavier rucks. The shoulder carry is how you get a full body workout through rucking, and is the perfect way to start rucking.
Rucker FAQ
SIZING & FIT
Should I get the 20L or 25L Rucker?
Size is based on your torso length and how you plan to use the ruck. Our standard 20L Rucker is the versatile choice for most; its shorter frame ensures the weight stays "high and tight" above your belt line. The 25L Rucker is designed for those with longer torsos or athletes who prefer using a Padded Hip Belt for long-distance rucking.
What is the "Belt Test" for sizing?
You want the bottom of your rucksack to sit above your beltline. If the ruck rests on or below your belt, it will cause friction and lower-back strain. When in doubt, choose the 20L Rucker to ensure the weight stays high and tight on your back.
What’s the difference between a rucking backpack and a weighted vest?
Unlike vests that constrict your chest, the Rucker keeps your airway open and focuses the load on your posterior chain. It also allows for much heavier scaling (up to 75lbs of Ruck Plates) and has the versatility to carry hydration and gear.
TRAINING & USE
How much weight should a beginner start with?
Start with the 20/20 Rule: a 20LB Ruck Plate in a 20L Rucker. This is the proven baseline for building strength and aerobic capacity. Focus on maintaining a steady pace and upright posture. Once you can comfortably cover 3 miles while maintaining a conversation, you’re ready to progress.
How many calories does rucking burn?
Rucking burns up to 3x more calories than walking alone. Because it is "active resistance training," it engages your entire body—building muscle while providing a high-intensity cardio workout.
How many times per week should I ruck?
If you are new, 1–2 times per week is ideal. If you are already active, 3–4 rucks per week is the sweet spot. Always start with shorter distances (1–2 miles) to let your joints and feet adapt to the load.
Is rucking better for your knees than running?
Rucking is low-impact cardio. It provides the same heart-rate boost as running with significantly less vertical impact on your joints.
Can rucking help with lower back pain?
Yes. The Rucker features built-in lumbar support that pulls your shoulders back and engages your core. By strengthening your back and glutes, rucking helps improve posture and alleviate "computer posture" pain.
Can I use the Rucker for sandbag training or PT?
Yes. It’s a gym on your back. It features four heavy-duty, padded grab handles (top, bottom, and both sides) designed specifically for overhead presses, squats, and lunges.
Can I use the Rucker for a GORUCK Event?
Absolutely. The Rucker is the purpose-built tool for GORUCK Events. With four padded handles for PT and 1000D CORDURA construction, it is the most durable ruck we’ve ever built for the world’s toughest endurance challenges
COMPATIBILITY & GEAR
What is the difference between the Rucker and GR1?
The GR1 is our original rucksack with a bombproof laptop compartment built for travel and everyday carry. The Rucker is a dedicated training tool. It features an elevated plate pocket, extra handles for Ruck PT, and a built-in lumbar support that is optimized for high-intensity rucking and workouts.
Does the Rucker fit the 45LB Ruck Plate?
Yes. Both the 20L and 25L Ruckers feature dual internal pockets. The Long Pocket is designed to carry Long Ruck Plates (including the 45LB), while the Short Pocket is optimized for Standard Ruck Plates.
What is the maximum weight capacity?
The elevated plate pockets are designed to hold up to 75lbs of Ruck Plates. High stress points are strength tested at over 400 lbs. The reinforced seams, 1000D CORDURA, and stress-tested handles are engineered to carry far more weight than any human can comfortably shoulder.
Does the Rucker come with a hip belt?
The Rucker features integrated MOLLE on the side of the pack. While not included, adding a Padded Hip Belt is recommended for longer rucks to shift weight from your shoulders to your hips for more comfortable miles.
Can I use the Rucker as a laptop bag?
While the plate pocket can fit a small laptop or tablet, it is not padded for electronics. The Rucker is a dedicated gym on your back; for everyday office or travel use, we recommend the GR1.
Can I use a hydration bladder with the Rucker?
Yes. There is a dedicated hydration tube exit port under the top handle and an internal D-ring to secure your bladder. We recommend our 3L Source Hydration Bladder for the best fit.
Do I need special boots for rucking?
You can ruck in any stable athletic shoe, but as you increase weight and distance, dedicated rucking boots (like our MACV-1) or rucking shoes (like our Mackall) provide the necessary ankle support and drainage needed for tough terrain.
DURABILITY & CARE
Why does the Rucker cost more than a standard backpack?
Most backpacks aren't built to carry 75lbs of Ruck Plates. The Rucker is overbuilt with 1000D CORDURA, reinforced stress points tested at 400lbs, and a dedicated plate carrier system. It’s a one-time investment backed by our SCARS Lifetime Guarantee—if you break it, we fix it.
Can I just use a regular backpack for rucking?
You can, but it likely won't last. Standard bags lack the structure to hold weight high on the back, leading to shoulder pain and torn seams. The Rucker is purpose-built to make heavy weight feel stable and secure.
What is the SCARS Lifetime Guarantee?
If you break it, we fix it. If there is a defect in workmanship or you manage to wear it out, we will repair or replace it free of charge. No receipt is necessary. We stand behind our gear for life.
Is the Rucker waterproof?
It is highly water-resistant. We use 1000D CORDURA and silent, glove-friendly YKK zippers that withstand heavy rain and mud. If the interior gets soaked during an event, the bottom grommets act as drain holes to ensure water doesn't pool inside.
How do I clean my Rucker after a muddy event?
Hose it down and let it air dry. For deep cleans, use mild soap and a soft brush. Never put your ruck in a washing machine or dryer, as this will damage the materials.
Do you offer a Military or First Responder discount?
Yes. We are a veteran-owned company and proudly offer a discount for military, first responders, teachers, and students through GovX.
Do you offer bulk or Ruck Club pricing?
Yes. For group orders or Ruck Club gear, please contact team@goruck.com for bulk pricing.
