The original M1945 pack system consisted of two packs strapped together. When carried together, this was a soldier’s Approach Pack. It accompanied soldiers as they marched towards their target. Once they reached their target, their Approach Packs were split to carry only their smaller essentials like weaponry, hydration, or rations. This was their Assault Bag.
